About

A family business based in Western North Carolina for over three generations

E. S. Koon, G. N. (Nick) Koon and Karl Koon

View our Vision & Mission Statement

In 1922, our founder, E. S. Koon, got his oil business start in Asheville, NC as a distributor for Atlantic. In 1930, Gulf Oil Corporation asked him to take over as the distributor for their products and the company moved to our 4 Fairview Road location that we still use today. The company weathered the trying times of the Great Depression and rationing during World War II. Following the war, the founder’s son, G. N. (Nick) Koon, returned from service in the Navy to join his father in the business.

The company prospered following the war, expanding their services to include service stations, tires, batteries, automobile accessories, lubricants and waxes along with the usual gasoline, diesel and heating oils. During the oil embargo and shortages in the early 1970’s, we worked hard to keep our customers in product, applying for allocations and petitioning the Federal Energy Office for emergency supplies.

After graduating college in 1979, Nick’s son Karl joined the company full time. Having grown up in the company working summers and vacations, he had hands-on experience in all phases of the business. Since then, the company has become one of the leading lubricant marketers in Western North Carolina.

In early 2004, Asheville Oil Company acquired Smoky Mountain Petroleum, again expanding our range of services to include propane and HVAC service and installation. As the only fully integrated petroleum supplier in the area, we truly are the one source for all of your petroleum and indoor comfort needs.

In 2021, we acquired Filter Supply after owner Ted Brackett announced his retirement, and moved most of our operations to our new facility at 22 Tribology Drive, off of Brevard Road. We welcome you to visit us in our new location, and hope you like it as much as we do!

    Favorite Recipe: Ramp Wine Sorbet

The palette cleansing sorbet is a required fourth course favorite at my Dinner in Celebration of the Ramp held in the spring of each year at Inadu Lodge.

    Ingredients

    • 1 ½ cups Ramp Wine (see note)
    • 1 ½ cups dry vermouth
    • 1 cup water
    • ½ cup sugar
    • 1 egg white (beaten)

    Directions

Mix the Ramp Wine, vermouth, water and sugar together in a medium (2-3 quart) pot.  Heat until the sugar dissolves.  Remove from heat, let cool to room temperature then chill in the refrigerator for at least one hour.  Assemble your ice cream maker (I use the Cuisinart model with the bowl that you keep in the freezer) and with the machine running, pour the chilled liquid.  When the mixture becomes slushy (about 12-17 minutes), add the beaten egg white (the egg white will turn the sorbet a brighter white and provides a silky mouth feel).  Return to the freezer for at least 3 hours to harden before serving.

Makes one quart serves about 16 using small scoops

Note: Ramp Wine is available from  Kirkwood Winery, Summersville, WV
